Measuring the flow of salt water

March 2015 Flow Measurement & Control

Salt or seawater contains chemicals that cause different physical and chemical properties in comparison to fresh water. The salinity of seawater has an influence on density, on the different temperatures of freezing and mainly on the corrosion of any constructed object with which it may come into contact.

The average salinity of seawater is around 3,5%. This means that each kilogram of seawater contains approximately 35 g of dissolved salts, making seawater highly corrosive. Not only does it dissolve the metal ions of different alloys rapidly, seawater also has a negative effect on many other materials used in the manufacture of devices for measuring flow.

It is, therefore, critically important to choose suitable materials for sensor linings as well as the electrodes of induction flowmeters used for continuous measurement of seawater. This ensures the durability, longevity and optimal functionality for this important class of meters.

Czech-based Elis Plzen is the supplier of the Flonet range of induction flowmeters (DN20-DN800) suitable for saline applications. The company has invested many years of R&D in applications for seawater, to ensure its induction flowmeter’s reliability and durability.

These flowmeters for saline application have sparked interest in the market; particularly model DN700, which was recently dispatched to a client in Greece.
