Specialised vacuum technology for the chemical sector

February 2015 Pneumatics & Hydraulics

Global vacuum technology specialist Schmalz has developed vacuum handling systems for use in the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors. The Jumbo Vacuum Tube Lifter, with a focus on solutions for use in explosion-proof areas, and VacuMaster Vacuum Lifting Device, improved with damage-free and ergonomic handling, have safety and operator comfort as a priority, and a varying number of attachments, tailored for each, facilitates ease of use and faster goods transference.

• The Jumbo Vacuum Tube Lifter, with 90° horizontal tilting, offers versatile lifting and movement with a single medium using vacuum only. Able to carry loads from 30 kg to a maximum of 300 kg, its attachments provide handling solutions for sacks, plastic sacks, canisters, buckets and barrels. Variations to the jumbo comprise JumboFlex for one-handed operation, JumboSprint for precise handling of heavy and unwieldy loads and JumboErgo with twist grip for fast handling.

Its safety functions include a quick-acting non-return valve and a large suction-pad area which prevents the load dropping, even in a power failure; and it has been designed in accordance with the German accident-preventing regulations. Compliance with the latest ergonomic best practice reduces risk of injury to the operator and handling efficiency is improved by 30%.

• Explosion-proof areas: The JumboHandy Ex and JumboSprint Ex have been tailored for use in explosion-proof areas and each has a wide range of stainless-steel suction pads. All mechanical parts have anti-static properties and grounding connections. In addition, Schmalz, through Tectra Automation, stocks a comprehensive range of accessories suitable for explosion-proof areas – including a quick-change system for rapid changing of suction pads.

Taking continued productivity under consideration, the SWA Quick-change Adapter ensures all suction pads can be changed in a matter of seconds, and Schmalz backs up its offering with a two-year warranty in single shift operation.

• The VacuMaster Lifting Device is the trendsetting generation of vacuum lifting devices. It has 90° horizontal tilting, 180° turning and a maximum lifting weight of 2000 kg. Available in three variations – Basic/Comfort, Eco and Light, safety, operator comfort and increased production are the manufacturer’s primary concerns.

The Basic/Comfort version, designed for handling barrels and sheets of weights from 125 kg to 750 kg, is extremely versatile. Components are matched individually to the specific application, and an ergonomic operator handle (with integrated pushbutton controls on the Comfort version) facilitate ease of control.

VacuMaster Eco enables horizontal handling of smooth and airtight workpieces between 250 kg and 1000 kg without an external power supply. This lack of an external power source results in increased flexibility and a battery-powered warning device, with a battery test function, facilitates safe operation.

The VacuMaster Light is specifically for airtight workpieces such as barrels. An intelligent warning device means that operators can safely handle its maximum 100 kg load, while ergonomic controls and a low intrinsic weight lend to a fatigue-free operation. The suction pads can be adjusted quickly and easily which assists with timeous operations when handling workpieces with varying dimensions.

All models have a three year warranty in single shift operation.

A number of Schmalz Crane Systems and Chain Hoists for increased safety and mobility are also available from Tectra Automation and adaptable vacuum generators with long operating life are also part of its tailored vacuum technology solutions.
