ABB Automation has awarded Streamworks a contract valued over R1,5m for the development of the control systems for the mineral separation and roaster plants at the new Iscor heavy minerals project based in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal. Streamworks' scope of supply includes the specification, software engineering, factory acceptance and site commissioning using ABB's Advant System.
Iscor's immediate focus is to commission the first phase of its R1,9 bn heavy mineral project, which consists of a mine and a concentrator at Hillendale and a mineral separation plant and a smelter at Empangeni. These operations are in close proximity to the well-developed road, rail and energy infrastructure of the Richards Bay deep-sea port. By 2005 the operation plans to produce 250 000 tons of titanium slag per annum, as well as zircon, rutile and pig iron.
