Two SA students participate in Honeywell leadership academy

Two South African high school students were selected to participate in the Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy (HLCA) which took place during February and March at the US Space and Rocket Centre in Hunstville, Alabama. Leah Michaels from the Western Cape attended the HLCA while Derek Martin from Pretoria was appointed as an ambassador to the HLCA. They joined 304 students from 38 countries.

The HLCA uses interactive technology and science-orientated workshops and team exercises to teach children of Honeywell employees leadership skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Michaels, a Grade 11 student from Bergvliet High School in the Western Cape said, “This was a once in a lifetime opportunity, I experienced so much. I am currently active in leadership and community outreach activities through my school as well as through my church. Attending the Leadership Challenge exposed me to the dynamics of working in a team, improved my communication skills and enabled me to grasp computer design techniques. All of these skills will be important to me as I wish to pursue the study of architecture at university.”
Martin, a Grade 12 student at St Albans College, Pretoria, successfully applied to be an ambassador at this year’s HLCA, having participated in the camp in 2013. Martin said, “Last year’s event made me realise the importance of students from around the world being welcomed, engaging with one another and become integrated into the various teams that comprise the HLCA. There is a heavy emphasis on team building and ice-breaker sessions, something I really enjoyed being able to facilitate. I saw myself as able to offer experience to the students as well as assisting the official camp mentors.”
Martin’s aim is to become a paediatrician.
