Parker Hannifin has extended its ETH range of high thrust electro-cylinders to make them suitable for use in explosive atmospheres (ATEX environments). The new ETH ATEX takes all the advantages of the popular electric cylinder ETH series, transferring them to applications for precise motion, positioning, setting and actuating in explosive environments.
An ATEX environment is one deemed to carry a mixture of air and flammable substances as gases, vapours, liquids, small fibres, mist or dust under atmospheric conditions that have the potential to explode. ATEX-certified equipment is vital for use in such conditions.
Those expected to benefit from ETH ATEX include sectors such as oil & gas, petrochemical, automotive (paint shops), biogas generation, gas turbine manufacturing, printing and distilling. For each application, the R&D team at Parker Hannifin will fully test an ETH ATEX cylinder using application data (load, velocity, duty cycle) supplied by the customer. This ensures that each cylinder can be supplied as ATEX-proofed for its intended purpose.
In addition to handling, packaging and industrial automation, the large sizes of ETH ATEX series cylinders also open up the possibility of substituting typical hydraulic applications. ETH ATEX has exceptionally high power density and is available in four sizes from 032, through 050 and 080, to 100. The range offers thrust force up to 56 000 N in strokes up to 2000 mm, with repeatability to ±0,03 mm and acceleration up to 10 m/s².
The new ETH ATEX range has certification for equipment group II, category 2 in explosive gas atmospheres. Together with EX series servomotors (also ATEX-certified), Parker Hannifin now offers a complete drive package for such applications.

Those working with hydraulic or pneumatic systems know that keeping your machinery running at peak performance balances productivity and cost. As systems age, they often become less efficient, requiring more energy and more frequent repairs. The good news is that you don’t always need to invest in an entirely new machine to solve these problems.
