Part of the Zest WEG Group, Shaw Controls recently dispatched the last two units of an order for seven electrical houses (E-Houses) to be installed for stacker and reclaimer machines at a coal mine in Mozambique.

“This is the largest order in our company’s history and our first E-House order within the Zest WEG Group,” says Shaw Controls managing director, Bevan Richards. “Much of the design information was leveraged off our holding company in Brazil, where numerous E-House projects have been successfully completed by WEG.
“We have a clear vision for future growth and expansion. We regard the E-House market as very appealing, as we’re able to combine our product offering into a complete E-House solution. This technology is relatively new in South Africa, compared to other parts of the world, but it is becoming more attractive than the traditional containerised substation solution, primarily because these E-House units can be manufactured to customised dimensions.”
Work on the seven E-Houses began in March 2013. Shaw Controls designed, procured and installed all the electrical equipment including MV switchgear, MV transformers, LV motor control centres, LV variable speed drives, HVAC, fire detection and suppression, PLCs and cabling. Factory acceptance testing was conducted at the company’s’ facility in Johannesburg, with units being pre-commissioned prior to dispatch. A technical team from Shaw Controls provided commissioning assistance on site.
“What differentiates us in the E-House market is that we are electrical engineering specialists with a precise understanding of the electrical equipment installed in these units,” comments Shaw. “Our approach is to manage production primarily as an electrical project and then ensure that the mechanical portion suits the electrics. I believe that among the factors leading to the award of this contract were our Group’s longstanding relationship with our customer, our ability to interpret the requirements and the necessary engineering, design and manufacturing skills to produce these E-Houses.
“Now that we have demonstrated our ability in South Africa, we’re in a position to compete for further E-House contracts and we see ourselves becoming very active in this market in the future. We’ve become the centre of excellence for this technology in the sub-Saharan region.”
