Coal valve reduces NOx in power plants

November 2013 Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

The NT Series coal valve reduces NOx, unburned carbon and CO, improving boiler performance in coal-fired power plants. It also decreases slagging and boiler tube wastage. The valve was developed to balance coal pipes while also maintaining or creating a more consistent coal distribution in the coal/air stream of the coal pipe. This is essential for optimising combustion.

Controlling flow from coal pulverisers to the burners is critical for obtaining optimised combustion. In today’s power market, where both efficiency and reduced emissions are vitally important, the ability to control the coal delivery for combustion is essential.

While most restricting type variable orifice coal control devices move coal into more concentrated coal regions (coal ropes), the NT Series coal valve uses a perforated blade design. The more the pipe is restricted, the more coal redistribution is increased, resulting in better combustion.

The NT Series is manually operated or can be supplied with an actuator. It is easy to install in any pipe size without removing a section of pipe, although a flanged spoolpiece is available as an option. Proven to regulate coal when installed properly at the mill outlet, the valve eliminates roping and excessive pipe wear associated with other coal adjusting devices.

It can be used to control both the coal mass and the coal velocity to the burners. Coal distribution can be improved in power plants by reducing LOI by 4%, combined with a dramatic reduction in CO.
