Two-hand control module

September 2001 Sensors & Transducers

The new Duo-Touch SG two-hand control system from Banner Engineering is an ergonomic, control-reliable approach to safe machine-cycle initiation that helps prevent repetitive stress injuries associated with repeated mechanical pushbutton operation. The Duo-Touch SG (second generation) two-hand control system includes two STBs (new ergonomic self-checking touch buttons) and a new DIN-mountable, microcontroller-based control module.

The controller can be used wherever safe, reliable machine initiation is required. Applications include: punch presses, cutting and forming machines, riveting and swaging machines and other applications where machine control systems can achieve an immediate stop action anywhere in the machine cycle. The DIN-mountable controller is a compact 22,5 mm wide, and has removable terminals for fast replacement.

The STB is a photoelectric 'beam-break' activation device that 'turns on' when a finger or hand is positioned on the button's touch surface. This patent-pending design also incorporates a self-checking optical circuit designed to detect internal safety-critical faults. Both the emitter and receiver are continuously exercised and monitored via secondary photoelements. If a fault is detected, the diverse-redundant microcontrollers will hold the STB outputs in the 'off' state and flash a fault LED to alert an operator.

The STB touch buttons connect to a Duo-Touch SG control module which monitors the normally open and normally closed outputs of each button. The diverse-redundant control module continuously checks to determine if both of the STB's outputs change state, if they change simultaneously or if there are any system faults. If a fault is detected, the controller will de-energise its force-guided relays, holding the relay contact open and a fault LED will flash to alert the operator.

The 24 V a.c./d.c. kit comes with relay output STBs; the 24 V d.c. kit has STBs with solid-state outputs. Both kits include the Duo-Touch SGT controller which operates on either 24 V a.c. or 24 V d.c.
