T-Gage temperature sensor from Banner

October 2013 Temperature Measurement

The Banner T-Gage sensor uses passive infrared sensing to detect temperature difference between an object and its surroundings. The sensor offers both an analog and a discrete output, and is capable of measuring temperature on stationary and moving targets. The one-piece sensor is housed in a convenient 18 mm threaded stainless steel barrel housing, making mounting simple. The T-Gage is a versatile device for monitoring temperatures from 0-300°C.

In an automotive application, a manufacturer was rejecting a supplier’s shipments of rear window assemblies due to faulty defrost grids. The supplier’s existing test procedure measured current draw across the entire heating system to detect an overall failure, but it could not detect the subtle impact of a single heating wire being broken. It was decided to create a better test fixture – one that would verify that each defrost wire heated to specification prior to shipping. A jig was constructed having one T-Gage sensor per defrost wire for a comprehensive test. By monitoring the analog outputs, the manufacturer was able to ensure that each individual wire reaches the correct temperature during the test procedure.

Other applications where the T-Gage has been used include testing electric blankets, detecting hot melt glue on cardboard box erecting machinery, detecting overheating on drilling and cutting tools and for sensing hot and cold food before and after packaging.
