Raytek has upgraded its popular ST range of portable infrared thermometers to include the new ST81 after last year’s successful upgrade of the ST61. The ST range was originally imported into South Africa over 20 years ago and was known throughout industry as the laser temperature gun. The full range of portable units is still available in Raytek colours, even though the company is now owned by the Fluke Corporation.
The new ST81 has gone through a shape change and offers more features than its predecessor, the ST61. Its IR temperature range is from -32 to +760°C, operating on an 8-14 micron wavelength which is well suited for this temperature range. The unit also has a K-type thermocouple input with a range up to 1372°C. The normal input manipulations – Instantaneous, Average, Min and Max – are still available, and a 20 point data gatherer is installed into the unit with a simple recall via the screen.
It includes precision, high-resolution optics, providing an excellent optical resolution (D:S ratio) of 50:1. Furthermore, the ST81 is still the same price as its predecessor the ST80.
It is very important to choose the correct IR wavelength to achieve reliable, accurate measurement. It is best to use the shortest possible wavelength for the temperature range. To measure over 900°C, a 1 or 2 μm wavelength is recommended, and under 900°C, 8-14 μm. These factors are extremely important when choosing the correct infrared thermometer. There are many units on the market that quote low error on high temperatures and have the wrong wavelength detector.
From entry level cost effective units to 2-colour portable units measuring temperatures up to 3000°C, Raytek can provide the optimum solution to infrared, non-contact temperature measurement, with a range as wide as in fixed equipment.
