Flow control in continuous blending and bottling

August 2001 Flow Measurement & Control

Modern trends in manufacturing are moving towards soft drinks and fruit juices that are blended by continuous process, rather than by batch, and are then fed directly into the filling machine. This process requires exact maintenance of the blend ratios of eg juice concentrate, water, sweetener and other flavourings to ensure that the beverage always has reproducible taste, identical quality and, last but not least, the same cost of production. Continuous blending plants mix the various components by computer control according to various recipes.

Variflux IFM 6080 K electromagnetic flowmeters from Krohne measure the flow rate of the individual components with a high degree of accuracy, and forward this information in the form of actual values to the blending computer. When a different recipe is selected, ie a different beverage is to be produced, the computer automatically changes the setpoint values for the individual components. This technology places high demands on electromagnetic flowmeters.

Because flow setpoints for the individual components can change drastically when the recipe is changed, the flowmeters need to be extremely accurate over very wide measuring spans. They also need to exhibit good dynamic performance in the control circuit.

Added to this are the strict requirements for CIP/SIP process compatibility and hygienic design, and absolute ruggedness to withstand cleaning from the outside, eg by high-pressure hoses and steam.
