Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Council's water reticulation system is undergoing a major telemetry upgrade. In a joint venture with main contractors, Specialist System Engineering (SSE) and Adroit Technologies have been awarded the contract to supply Johannesburg Water with scada systems for the development of 55 new telemetry outstations and the upgrading of 20 outstations. In total, four new scada systems and three upgraded scada systems will be supplied.
The entire telemetry system covers a vast area, which incorporates five regions, namely central and southern Johannesburg, Midrand, Sandton and Randburg. The system will report to each of the scada situated in the five regions as well as a central control room in the centre of Johannesburg.
According to Gert Bezuidenhout, SSE's Managing Director, Adroit will be used as a realtime data display system, and its data logging facilities will be used to store data on a MS SQL server. "We are very happy to integrate Adroit into the system," says Bezuidenhout. "In addition to having proven itself to be the ideal scada package for such systems, it is exceptionally user-friendly and cost-effective. Adroit is also the only locally developed product with excellent local support."
The implementation of the new telemetry system is an important step towards the optimal management of water resources in the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan region. The combination of SSE's advanced technology, with its unique communications capabilities, and Adroit's proven software, will allow Johannesburg Water to gather realtime data from reservoirs and flowmeters for a management information system (MIS) that will facilitate accurate network planning.
