Leine & Linde's pulse encoder is an important component for speed feedback in the increasingly effective paper machines that produce paper of different types around the clock.
An unplanned stop in such a machine can cause significant financial losses. To avoid such a production stop due to a worn-out encoder, Leine & Linde has developed an advanced diagnostic system (ADS) for the incremental pulse encoders in the heavy duty series.
The system uses fast logic in coordination with a microprocessor to continually supervise all of the encoder's functions and thereby detect a developing fault at a very early stage. This detection occurs so early that in most cases the encoder can still perform its task and may be changed out during a planned maintenance stop.
The primary control system is informed of a detected malfunction via a signal on the encoder's alarm output. This alarm signal notifies the operator with the help of a PC and the diagnostic system's software can communicate with the encoder and receive information about the indicated malfunction. The operator is informed of the frequency, internal temperature and time at which the malfunction occurred, as well as if the problem is internal in the encoder or external in the cable between the encoder and the control system. This is possible through one of the company's patented diagnostic functions which monitors the signals produced on the cable after the encoder's linedriver.
Guided by the information from the analysis software, the operator can plan the exchange of the encoder or inspection of the cable and the control system's pulse inputs. The total operating time of the encoder and the maximum and minimum operating temperatures are also presented by the ADS software as an aid in decisions on preventative maintenance.
