High performance inverter

August 2001 Motion Control & Drives

Toshiba has launched a new high performance inverter, designated the VF-A7, that has advanced sensorless flux vector control, automatic tuning and comes with an integral filter.

The company has refined its flux vector control to develop exceptionally high torque at low speed and can claim more than 200% torque as low as 0,5 Hz. The speed control range has also been broadened to 1:150, which means the drive is well suited for high performance machines. The VF-A7 drive is also suitable for winding applications thanks to a new torque control feature.

On-line automatic tuning enables both easy set-up without motor instability and this function also allows high torque without being influenced by motor temperature. A further feature is the drive's ability to avoid nuisance tripping by varying acceleration and deceleration times according to load.

By incorporating an EMC filter as standard, Toshiba provides a drive that is inherently compliant with CE certification requirements and is significantly more compact than other drive/filter combinations. The company claims a space saving of up to 30%, which is a major benefit to panel builders and others with space constraints. Another consequence of the use of an integral filter is reduced wiring.

The VF-A7 comes with a host of options and communication capabilities. Additional to the standard RS485 comms port is a card giving RS232C, RS485 or connection to Toshiba's own high-speed TOSLINE-F10M, TOSLINE-S20 fieldbuses as well as DeviceNet and Profibus. There is a closed loop option to take encoder or resolver feedback, extended terminal boards and an externally connected parameter writer for remote programming.

The new VF-A5 series drives cover a range from 0,4 to 55 kW in three-phase 200 V class and from 0,75 to 280 kW in 400 V class.
