Festo grows production at Bagtech

June 2012 SCADA/HMI

Bagtech International, a manufacturer of bagging equipment and a bagging company for various big manufacturers in the fertiliser industry, has experienced amazing results since it made Festo its automation partner of choice. Recently, a project that started out as an initial component switch, eventually led to the complete automation and control of a four-hopper mobile blending plant for fertiliser.

Building on a relationship of trust based on the successful switch to the Festo CR range of cylinders, Bagtech subsequently switched all of its machinery to the Festo CPX T03 PLCs, MPA valve terminals and FED-700 displays – supplied as a complete solution in enclosures from Festo. “Providing a complete process automation solution which increases our customers’ productivity is part of the Festo mission,” says Festo sales engineer Johan Bester. “We are very proud to be involved in Bagtech projects.”

When Bagtech secured an order for a specific fertiliser that required the extraction of raw products in the correct ratio, from four individual 5-ton bulk holding hoppers, Festo was tasked with developing an automation solution. But, there was an additional complication, subsequent to the initial ratio extraction, the 1500 kg batches had to be transported to a ribbon blender and processed for a pre-determined time to create a consistent mixture. From there, the product is sent to a bagging machine that fills 50 kg bags with product at a rate of 60 tons/hour and to an accuracy of 50 grams.

Festo developed a monitoring and control solution for the entire process using a scada solution from Wonderware. The system runs on a PC platform with remote access from a laptop or iPad. Report pages created by the scada can be printed at the end of each production run and historical trending reports, also included in the scada solution, assist with production analyses. Festo provides remote backup and system support via the Internet.

Bagtech is now marketing this solution globally and it is currently one of the fastest, most accurate and technically-advanced machines in the industry. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOPoKo4VIuM
