HMIs for water treatment facilities

October 2025 SCADA/HMI

Water resources are subject to escalating pressure due to population growth, urbanisation and industrialisation. Wastewater laden with pollutants such as oils, suspended solids, organic matter and heavy metals is a threat to the environment and public health.

Challenges

However, there are some challenges. Wastewater treatment systems generally consist of numerous plants that are physically spread out. Firstly, the dispersed layout of the plants and equipment makes it difficult to respond to issues in a timely manner. Secondly, authorisation and control are complex due to the large number of devices and operators. Furthermore, equipment acquired over time generally has a range of designs, generating data in different formats. All these issues affect the system’s operational efficiency and its economic benefits.

The solution

DirectLogic Automation supplies a range of Weintek HMI touch screens featuring state-of-the-art technology, flexibility, rugged construction and open connectivity. To address the above challenges, an international wastewater treatment facility adopted the Weintek cMT2158X HMI as the primary interface for its onsite operations.

This has excellent communication capabilities. Data collected by the HMI on site is sent to a cMT-FHDX-820 in the control room, which displays it on a large external screen in order to provide centralised monitoring of all onsite devices.

The system employs the following features, which address each challenge:

Data visualisation

For the HMIs on site and for the control room screens, the system presents data with visuals that closely reflect onsite conditions with the help of dynamic objects, trend charts and Weintek’s high-quality picture libraries.

Authorisation management and system security

The cMT2158X features user authorisation management and an operation log, ensuring full traceability and operator safety.

Real-time notification and remote monitoring

EasyAccess 2.0 provides operators with easy remote access to the HMI, featuring HMI screen monitoring and push notification, which relays real-time events to operators. For tuning and troubleshooting there is also a pass-through feature, which enables remote access to the PLC via the HMI.

Data output and management

The HMI offers backup via both external USB drives and FTP. Supporting both client and server modes, the FTP function allows reports and screen captures to be backed up to a server. File transfer in the opposite direction is just as easy. More importantly, integration of all data into the HMI system unifies the reporting format, making archiving and data retrieval much simpler.

Benefits

Through the implementation of the Weintek solution, the system has effectively tackled challenges in data visualisation, integration and centralised management. Specifically, enhanced visualisation facilitates the decision-making process, and there is a significant improvement in file accessibility and system security. Collectively, these solutions have enhanced the efficiency of the wastewater treatment process, reducing labour requirements and saving time, thereby generating economic benefits and promoting environmental sustainability.
