Mitech's desuperheating stations utilise a spillback nozzle to provide accurate temperature control over a wide range of conditions.
The principle of the spillback nozzle is that high pressure water is piped to the nozzle and what is not required for cooling, is returned through a control valve to a condensate return line. To add more water to the steam, the control valve is closed.
The advantage of this system, compared with a conventional spray nozzle, is that the spillback unit experiences high-pressure water at all conditions which ensures good atomisation. In a conventional system, the control valve is in the supply line and if only a small amount of water is required, most of the available pressure is dropped across the valve.
The nozzle cannot perform well with low water pressure, resulting in poor atomisation, bad temperature control and the likelihood of thermal cracking of the downstream pipework.
