Transition Networks, the global leader in media conversion products, has appointed ATC as its distribution and logistic centre for Africa.

ATC is Africa's sole manufacturer of optical fibre and leading manufacturer and supplier of turnkey communication cabling projects. "Due to the increasing demand to deliver a turnkey service, we supply Transition Networks media conversion equipment as part of our value added product range," remarks ATC Managing Director Cobus Malan. "During our nine-year relationship ATC established Transition as the local market leader and through various projects Transition products have been installed in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Zambia."

At the recent launch of Transition's Gigabit Ethernet converter, Cheri Beranek Podzimek, Vice President: Marketing remarked, "As networking speeds increase, the need for media converters adapted to solve specific problems is becoming ever more acute. Transition is committed to keeping abreast of changes in the market in order to introduce innovative new technology to help organisations overcome these networking problems ... Transition's new Gigabit Ethernet converter is perfect for enterprise networks or connecting campus backbones with bandwidth applications, such as large file transfers with multimedia."

As the thirst for network bandwidth increases, the move to Gigabit Ethernet is an eventuality for most network managers - and migrating as efficiently as possible is the main goal. With Transition's new Gigabit copper to optical fibre media converters, network managers can cover distances up to 65 km.

The new Gigabit copper to optical fibre converters have many advanced features that ensure efficient and easy running of a network. These include: 'Auto Negotiation' between full and half duplex modes on 1000Base-T plus the ability to select this manually on 100Base-SX/LX units; 'Link Pass Through', which enables the equipment at the remote end of the link to 'see' failure and take corrective action; and Pause which allows you communicate with an attached network device due to the fact that auto-negotiation is not supported over fibre.

This range of optical fibre conversion products includes multimode and singlemode optical fibre versions, plus a singlemode long haul unit - available in standalone and chassis-based options.

Transition Networks designs and markets conversion technology across a broad spectrum of networking protocols including Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, FDDI, ATM and Token Ring. Available in standalone and chassis-based formats, all Transition products come with a lifetime warranty.

Transition Networks is recognised as a leading supplier of media conversion equipment for the LAN and private data networks industry, with a broad range of conversion products on offer.
