When monitoring the efficiency of a combustion process, it is important to know and understand the nature of the coal being burned. Generally a proximate analysis will include the following: heat value; moisture content; hardness (Hard Grove Index); sulphur content; ash content; and volatility. It is essential to know these parameters when optimising the combustion process at coal fired power plants and large boilers. The above properties are identified by taking representative samples from each coal batch.

M & W Asketeknik’s RCS sampling system provides the operator with the means for extracting and preparing representative samples of the coal. The sample size is suitable for laboratory analysis.The results of the laboratory tests are used for calculating the payment due for each batch of coal supplied; adjusting the coal flow to the mills; calculating the amount of by-product from each batch of coal; calculating the emissions from each batch of coal; and calculating the blending of various coal batches to obtain maximum output from the power plant. M&W coal sampling systems operate in accordance with approved international standards.
