For the 23 children living at Thandanani House of Refuge, Christmas came early last year thanks to Vega Instruments SA, a corporate sponsor of the home. Established in early 2003, the home is part of the Kingsway Centre of Concern outreach in the Zandspruit informal settlement near Honeydew, Johannesburg. Kingsway School had already been established in Randpark Ridge, but in the late 1990s a need was identified for a place of safety for the children from the wider Zandspruit community. The development of Thandanani began with the purchase of a large farmhouse on 6 hectacres of land in December 2001 and today the home houses children ranging in age from 2 to 18.
Vega Instruments SA, now headquartered in Honeydew and a corporate sponsor for Thandanani, was host and benefactor to the children for an afternoon early in November. MD John Groom: “We see our involvement in the children’s well being as an ongoing commitment. This is just the beginning as we plan to support the development of careers in industry and business for some of the young girls and boys here today.”
During this afternoon of fun, the children were treated to lunch and gifts presented by Rainer Mielke, financial director of Vega Grieshaber Germany. A delivery of fridges, freezers, kitchen equipment and big-screen TVs was appreciated by an outburst of song from all the residents of the Thandanani community.
