In Germany, one of the biggest pulp mills in the world has been built on a former nuclear power plant site, 60 hectares in size, at a cost of about €1 billion. The new pulp mill operates sustainably with energy produced on site from the wood ingredients detached in the digestion processes. The German consumer protection department referred to the project as ‘an outstanding example of ecologically optimal recycling management’ as the wood is processed almost without any waste.
The plant operates continuously and therefore extremely high demands are made on the reliability and ease of maintenance of the valves. Arca linear valves were chosen as they had proved successful over many years at a sister pulp and paper facility. The intelligent ArcaPro positioner with extended diagnostics gives detailed information about the condition of the valves (status and life cycle parameters) and about possible disturbances (localisation of problems). Preventive maintenance can thus be planned efficiently with production stops reduced to a minimum.
Every year 550 000 tons of high quality long fibre pulp is produced in the plant from three million solid cubic metres of pine and fir. Most of the wood is derived from planned thinning of forests and waste from the wood industry.
