Green compressor condensate waste management

October 2011 Pneumatics & Hydraulics

An industrial air compressor can draw in about 6200 litres of water per week generating a large amount of oily condensate when working in a 30°C ambient with a 70% RH. The after cooler and air filters and dryers will remove some 97% of this before it contaminates the expensive equipment and pneumatics in the plant, which means the problem shifts from one of contamination to one of waste management.

How to handle the oily waste water

Bulk oily liquid collection and containment is messy, wastes space and increases operational costs. Since the oil content of the waste condensate is low in comparison to the water volume, extracting the oils to leave clean water generates a significant reduction in the volume of waste to be handled.

Allowing pollutants down a drain is not legal nor is it environmentally acceptable. ISO ratings can be lost if improper dumping is detected and legislation now makes the CEO financially liable for fines levied if pollutants are allowed into storm water drains or a natural water course.

The Sepura range of oily water separators from Artic Driers is a simple solution for treating the oily waste water generated by a compressor system. The oils are separated from the water by two high efficiency filters, leaving clean water that can be disposed of legally into a storm drain.

The Sterling adsorption media used in this waste water management system offers big improvements over older systems. The new Sterling media can accept up to 50% higher flow rates with shorter contact times and is highly effective at removing mineral and synthetic emulsions from the waste water stream. The exhausted contamination bags can then be disposed of by any certified waste disposal company.

The recently launched 3500 and 7000 series of separators extends the product range with new pallet sized packs that, like the smaller sets, provide an easy user friendly solution to waste water management.
