Protecting Ethernet lines from power surges
September 2011
Electrical Power & Protection
The protection of sensitive equipment from power surges on Ethernet data lines has become more important than ever with the advent of faster standards such as 100 and 1000Base-T Ethernet. In the past, if a 10BaseT interface was damaged, it was easily replaced at minimal cost. With modern equipment having integrated 100/1000Base T interfaces, this is no longer the case. The risk of not using external surge protection is higher than ever.
Designed to safeguard sensitive equipment, Copa’s Net Protector surge arresters protect switches, hubs and 10/100 Base T systems. The enclosure is equipped with three eight-way surge protection boards and only requires the space of one vertical module for 24 port protection.
The surge protection modules are generally installed in distribution cabinets inserted as a patch panel with surge protection or as a retrofit for patching to the device to be protected. The RJ45 retrofit unit is designed for existing systems and is easily patched between the panel and the active component. Only 1U in height with a depth of 80 mm, the modules are available in 8, 16 and 24-way formats and are fitted with eight-way shielded connectors.
