In today’s automated industrial and utility environments, many plants are moving away from serial and point to point connections between devices and switching to Ethernet instead. Due to the open Ethernet standard, vendors of IEDs and RTUs are starting to include Ethernet interfaces in all new devices, but what about the older legacy systems in play? Due to the cost involved in upgrading an entire site to Ethernet, it is often not feasible to undertake the project all at once. However, when upgrading over time, care must be taken to maintain continuous communication between devices from different vendors.
The new FEP (front end processor) and SCS (substations communications server) from RuggedCom are designed to reduce the impact to a site that can be caused by such an upgrade. These units connect directly to the end devices and provide protocol conversion allowing multiple vendor devices to retain communication amongst each other.
With support currently for over 40 protocols, and more on the way, the RuggedCom FEP or SCS are invaluable when devices using different protocols need to communicate amongst themselves.
