Compact temperature head transmitter

June 2001 Temperature Measurement

The new iTEMP TMT 184 Profibus-PA temperature head transmitter from Endress+Hauser is claimed to remain, dimensionally, the smallest device of its kind in the world today.

Profibus-PA improves performance over the traditional 4-20 mA signal transmission due to reduced complexity, more reliable transmission over long distances and significant cabling cost savings. Reduced costs in planning, documentation, installation and commissioning are additional benefits of using Profibus-PA networks.

The transmitter is universally programmable from the control room for a wide range of input signals with the use of Profibus-PA profile V3.0 compatible software. This feature reduces costs associated with spares holding, as the device is freely programmable for a choice of any RTD and TC type, resistance and mV input signals. Profile V3.0 further allows extensive diagnostic information, such as temperature sensor failure.

An intrinsically safe version certified to ATEX, FM and CSA standards, is also available ensuring plant security even in hazardous plant environments. Plant integrity is further ensured by the fact that TMT 184 complies to the NAMUR NE 21 standard for EMV protection, is fully galvanically isolated in excess of 2 kV, maintains accuracy over the complete measuring range and throughout the total ambient temperature range.

The small DIN 43 729 form B size allows TMT 184 to be installed in all standard temperature sensor heads. This includes both the new standard Form B and the larger Form A sensor head format. The reduced size and advances in manufacturing technology have also led to a price reduction of up to 25% compared to previous, similar device types.

Difficult environmental conditions are no challenge for the rugged TMT 184. The device is fully potted and therefore has been installed, without influence on the temperature signal, in areas where condensate frequently occurs. Secure terminal screws are mechanically 'locked' and cannot fall out during cable connection. Reverse polarity protection ensures that there is no electronic damage if incorrectly connected.
