Continuous measurements for process control

July 2011 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Ultramat 23 gas analyser – Siemens’ unique solution for biogas applications.

The proven Ultramat 23 gas analyser, now extended with a hydrogen sulphide (H2S) sensor, provides a simple and complete solution for analysis requirements in biogas plants. It is unique in that it combines the measurement of infrared active gases with oxygen and H2S sensors in a single unit to determine process status in the plant through continuous analysis of the gas composition.

The instrument measures four gas components simultaneously: two infrared active gases, methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) as well as oxygen (O2) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) using electrochemical cells. The measurements of all components are made continuously allowing better process control which results in an economically optimised process and superior product quality.

Benefits

* Better process control – continuous measurements of all four gas components in one compact analyser.

* Improved durability and process control even under extreme conditions – long operating life of the H2S sensor even at high concentrations.

* Improved safety – measurement of flammable gases, as found in biogas plants (eg, 70% CH4) is allowed (TÜV certificate).

* Reduced calibration effort and costs – minimal drift of the H2S at the endpoint (<1% per month), auto-calibration with ambient air.

* Simplified process integration, remote operation and control – open interface architecture.

* (RS485, RS232; Profibus PA/DP, Siprom GA).

* Service information and logbook – preventive maintenance, help for service and maintenance personnel.

* Applications are found in fermenter control for biogas generation, gas engine monitoring, optimisation of methane yield and feed and quality control of biogas fed into commercial gas distribution networks.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
