A monitor for surge protection devices
June 2011
Electrical Power & Protection
DEHN’s LifeCheck testing device quickly and easily monitors surge protection devices (SPDs) to detect thermal or electrical overload conditions which are not generally visible. Results are shown within a matter of seconds and the SPD module does not have to be removed during system operation.
SPDs can be tested and measured at regular intervals and assessed according to predetermined criteria. This allows faults to be detected before the SPD fails. Information is indicated on a handheld tester incorporating a RFID reader which remotely signals the responder in the SPD. Tests can be carried out at any time without interrupting signal transmission.
No expertise is required for testing. The LifeCheck saves the test data, which can be transmitted via a USB interface to a PC for printing or storage. This facilitates the compilation of the documentation required for compliance with standard EN 62305-3 for lightning protection.
