DC/DC converter for railway applications

June 2011 Electrical Power & Protection

Mean Well has introduced its second generation 100 W enclosed type single output DC/DC converter – RSD-100 series – to fulfil various requirement in vehicle applications. The launch of the first railway DC/DC converter with EN50155 railway certificate compliance allows Mean Well formal entry into the railway power supply market. Featuring a wide input range and 4000 VDC input/output isolation, RSD-100 series is characterised by 5G anti-vibration ability, wide range working temperature range, protection against short circuit, overload, output over voltage, input reverse polarity and built-in constant current limiting.

Based on up to date high efficiency circuit design, RSD-100 series possess efficiency up to 91%. All series offer semi-encapsulated for PCB protection to provide anti-moisture, anti-dust, heat dissipation and vibration resistance. They can be cooled without forced air between -40 to 70°C ambient temperature for applications in harsh environments with high ambient, dust and moisture. The design of these new converters complies with railway certificates (EN50155, IEC60571, IEC61373, EN50121-3-2) making them suitable for use in vehicles requiring a DC power source. Applications include railway, metro rapid transit systems, subways and buses. In addition, along with external batteries as the energy source, they are also suitable for harsh industrial installations such as security system, UPS systems, and telecommunications equipments.
