Shell and Krohne have signed an agreement to commercialise a new multiphase flowmeter based on the magnetic resonance principle and designed specifically for oil and gas field installations. The agreement comprises the manufacturing, marketing and sales of the new meter, developed through an R&D collaboration between Shell and magnetic resonance specialist Spinlock. The aim is to bring the first generation flowmeter into operation in 2012.
The magnetic resonance (MR) principle is based on strong permanent magnets exciting the medium particles to oscillate and measurement of the resulting resonance frequency. Krohne is one of the first manufacturers to implement this principle in an inline multiphase flowmeter for use in oil and gas applications that allows simultaneous measurement of both gas and liquid phase flow. The most important application will be the measurement of crude oil directly at the well where it is essentially a mixture of oil, natural gas and water. The application of an MR flowmeter will offer oil companies major cost reductions.
Stephan Neuburger (Krohne) and Jeroen Regtien (Shell) after signing the contract
“Leveraging enhanced and cost-effective multiphase metering solutions in our operations is a priority area for Shell. With Krohne we have found a recognised partner to commercialise this exciting technology,” says Jeroen Regtien, vice-president hydrocarbon recovery technologies.
“This new and highly innovative measuring principle fits perfectly in the Krohne culture and is a strategic addition to the existing product portfolio,” says Stephan Neuburger, managing director of the Krohne group.

Editor's Choice Flow Measurement & Control
There are many processes where it is undesirable for the load to suddenly change quickly, for example in the paper industry. Examples of level control have involved reasonably fast tuning. An example of a level loop tuned this way and responding to a step change in setpoint is given.
