Motion Control & Drives

Perfectly tailored CNC drive system

March 2011 Motion Control & Drives

With the Sinumerik 828D Basic T, Siemens has developed a robust and precise CNC for worldwide use. As an entry level CNC for the compact class, it is ideally suited to standardised turning machines with up to five axes/spindles, including driven tools. Equipped with a screen, keyboard and CNC electronics, each unit requires minimal interfaces and cabling for maximum system availability. In addition, the existing operator panel, which consists of die-cast magnesium, enables the new CNC to function reliably in harsh operating conditions with maintenance-free operation.

Hi-tech for the compact class

Modern processor technology and software architecture based on 80-bit floating point precision, allow values in the region of one tenth of a micrometer to be achieved. The degree of precision which can be achieved in practice is therefore not limited by the control, but is instead defined by the capabilities of the mechanical components. In addition to the high degree of precision, the Sinumerik 828D Basic T also facilitates particularly flexible use, as it is able to execute a variety of drilling, milling and turning operations. With intelligent kinematic transformation between the spindle and X axis, the most diverse range of milling and drilling processes can be executed on the front face and peripheral surface of the work piece.

A special function of this system is the Easy Message function, which updates selected staff members on all the essential manufacturing process data via SMS. If a machine requires some new raw parts or a turning tool is approaching the end of its service life, the Sinumerik 828D Basic T sends corresponding details to maximise the productivity of the machine.

Sinamics drive – robust, yet easy to maintain

To round off the new CNC, Siemens offers the new Sinamics S120 Combi, an integral drive system tailored to the requirements of compact standard machines. To ensure robustness, the feed unit and motor modules have been integrated into a single device. This reduces the number of wiring interfaces required, while a heatsink allows optimal dissipation from the machine.

With this version, Siemens Drive Technologies Division has extended its range of controls in the Sinumerik 828D compact class. An extensive range of machine tool controls is now available for every CNC requirement, from Sinumerik 828D for demanding turning and milling machines in the workshop, to the Sinumerik 840D sl for premium applications and the Sinumerik 802 series for standard machine applications.
