Field communications for decentralised scada systems

February 2011 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

Moxa has introduced a new industrial multiservice gateway that is powerful enough to construct decentralised scada systems for seamless communications at field sites and between the field site and control centre in wide-area distributed applications such as oil and gas, pipeline and trackside monitoring. The 4-slot VPort 704 interfaces with modular communication options collects and transforms serial I/O, video and other types of data into Ethernet packets for fast and reliable transmission over IP networks.

Versatile network solutions

The modular VPort 704 accepts any combination of Moxa VPM-7000 series communication modules to form a custom-tailored network solution. Available modules include an IP video encoder (VPM-7304), a serial-to-Ethernet module (VPM-7704) and others that expand the functionality and flexibility.

Reliable Gigabit performance

With three Gigabit and three 10/100 Mbps ports built-in, the gateway supports port redundancy and Turbo Ring fast network fault recovery to guarantee gigabit network performance. The high volume and speed performance makes it ideal for IP surveillance as well as the other large scale distributed applications.

Simplified installation and operation

The Ethernet-interface backplane allows communication of many types of data on an Ethernet platform. This reduces wiring and maintenance costs and facilitates deployment to control cabinets with limited space available. The built-in visual GUI is intuitive to use and allows the users to manage and configure all of the modules through a single web consol.

Other features

* Supports RSTP, Turbo Ring and ring coupling.

* Supports VLAN, IGMP Snooping, and QoS.

* -40 to 75°C operating temperature range.

* Modular functionality and expandability.

* High MTBF with passive backplane.

* Fanless operation.

Michael Brown Control Engineering Fieldbus & Industrial Networking
Feedforward control is a powerful technique that can dramatically improve control variance in cases where load changes cause big deviations from setpoint and the actual process dynamics are too slow to allow the feedback controller to operate fast enough to catch these disturbances.
