SEW-Eurodrive offers hygienic solutions for the poultry industry.
On maintenance day a common sight in some chicken houses, bottling plants and abattoirs is the sight of plastic bags running alongside conveyors or machinery where the motors and gearboxes ought to be. Closer inspection reveals that the units are still on the conveyors, but they have been covered in plastic as protection from the high pressure hoses which are used to clean and sanitise the plant. This type of solution wastes time and resources and the plastic covering could be compromised by the high pressure jets if fitted ineffectively. Also, when equipment is enclosed for protection this way the motors and gearboxes are excluded from the cleaning processes.
SEW-Eurodrive offers a solution
SEW-Eurodrive customer Mordt Engineering is a specialist conveyor manufacturer for the poultry suppliers. Owner Norman Mordt comments: “We realise that it is critical to address the health and safety risks associated with poultry processing. The use of plastic coverings over geared motors during cleaning could lead to much bigger problems in the long run and is not the best solution in the food industry.”
Upon consultation, SEW-Eurodrive proposed its DAS Aseptic drive geared motor range designed specifically for use in hygienic environments. Features include a totally enclosed motor with a smooth surface and no cooling fins. There is therefore no place for dirt to build up and the unit is easily cleaned by the high pressure hoses during the sanitising process. The unit uses pure convection cooling eliminating the need for a cooling fan and is available in sizes from 0,25 to 1,5 kW. IP66 protection is standard with IP65 provided when a motor brake is employed. All motors are provided with internal corrosion protection and can be connected via a plug-in enclosure IP66 form.
