PSY Systems - offering infinite solutions in IPC and BMS

February 2011 System Integration & Control Systems Design

In 2000 PSY Systems opened its doors in Johannesburg and immediately established a national footprint as a design house with a client base ranging from Cape Town to Pretoria. The company is a preferred systems integrator for ABB’s process and automation division, its measurement process division and its robotics division. “In addition, we are also responsible for integrating discrete automation and motion control as well as low voltage equipment for ABB,” says company founder Paul Young.

Other agencies represented in the PSY portfolio include Omron’s automation products and specific LG products. “Add to this the fact that we are also integrators of Adroit scada systems and it is obvious that we are able to supply clients with a well-rounded systems product offering,” adds Young. “PSY Systems is motivated to make life easier for its clients. We find that many companies use proprietary scada systems, but we have decided to utilise MS Access. By instilling our own sophisticated programming into the system from the outset, this effectively allows the client to easily conduct audits and make changes on the system, saving in both time and money.

“In a very exciting diversification for the company we decided to venture into building management systems in response to a request from ABB 18 months ago. They asked us to become the systems integrators for a platform they had developed specifically for switching banks of lights in buildings. This has really taken off and the BMS side of our business has grown substantially in a short space of time.”

Young explains that the company has six employees (a driver, two CAD designers and three engineers) in its Johannesburg office with all panel installation and cabling subcontracted to specialists, Rittal. “PSY is responsible for the conceptualisation of a client’s control system through consultation with other relevant subcontractors. We design and develop customised control systems and ensure that the installed panels are all built to factory acceptance tested (FAT) standards.

“Compliance to these standards by Rittal makes installation easy. Although we are happy to work with client-specified installers we do insist on auditing their work before committing to a relationship with them. Often we find that although other installers may quote a client a lower initial cost the quality cannot always be assured, which often results in higher overall costs in the long run.”

PSY provides its clients with full training in order for them to be able to undertake all future maintenance themselves if this is what is required. This is either provided directly by suppliers or, in the case of specialised training, outsourced by PSY.

Young is adamant that the secret to the company’s success lies in its attitude of following through on every project. “We apply our combined years of experience to provide our clients with a turnkey solution characterised by high levels of service. This is evident at all levels from the supply of drawings to the physical handover of the completed solution.

“We do not walk away from any project before we are 100% satisfied that it is completed to the standards and specifications that the client expects. At the end of the day one could say that there is an umbilical cord between us and our clients,” Young quips.

Recent projects completed by PSY Systems include an OEM system for a glass toughening machine, a number of projects for Columbus Stainless Steel and various smaller projects for independent companies.
