What is the S7-1200?

November 2010 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

The Simatic S7-1200 is a new modular compact controller from Siemens which is equipped for a full range of automation applications and it is part of the core of the offering for complete and comprehensive solutions. With high-performance and many other integrated features, users can experience a high level of efficiency for solving precise automation tasks.

Communication options

The integrated Profinet interface provides seamless communication with the Simatic Step 7 Basic engineering system for programming, with Simatic HMI basic panels for visualisation and third-party devices for advanced integration options. The port has auto-crossover functionality with data transmission rates at 10/100 Mb/s which can handle up to 16 Ethernet connections simultaneously. In applications where point-to-point serial communication is required, up to three communication modules can be connected to any of the CPU range. This provides various protocols such as Modbus (both master and slave blocks are integrated in the software), GPRS for telemetry/wireless and printers or scanners.

Scalable and flexible design

The S7-1200 controller family has been designed with maximum flexibility to fit individual machine requirements. This allows custom design and ensures future system expansion is quick and easy. With one signal board that can be added to any of the CPUs, digital or analogue I/O or even a high-speed-counter can be added to the controller without affecting its physical size. In applications where the user requires extra inputs and outputs, up to eight signal modules can be connected to the larger CPUs.

Engineering Software – it is the interplay that makes the difference

With the new Step 7 Basic, one common engineering framework is all that is needed for task development in various applications. The new engineering system for the S7-1200 includes Simatic WinCC Basic for configuring Simatic HMI panels. The functionality provided by this engineering software is the ingredient that makes the interplay between the controller and the HMI so powerful. Smart functionalities such as intuitive editors as well as the drag and drop functionality allow faster engineering.

In today’s world, automation and technology systems are exerting more influence on the way businesses run. Using these systems for maximum efficiency is a key factor for success, which is why the S7-1200 fits today’s demand. It keeps things simple and still powerful because all of the components work together.
