Servo has safety built in

October 2010 Motion Control & Drives

Compact construction and support for side-by-side mounting allows users of Omron’s new Accurax G5 servo drives to achieve cabinet space savings of up to 50%. The new drives combine performance – sub-micron accuracy and millisecond settling times – with a comprehensive range of built-in features, including safety and communication solutions.

The new servo drives have two safety inputs and an external device monitoring output, which can be linked from one drive to another without the need for additional safety relays. Up to eight drives can be connected to a single safety relay, greatly reducing hardware and wiring costs. The safety torque off function of the drives conforms to PL-d in line with ISO13849, SIL2 in line with EN61508 and Cat 3 in line with EN954.

The Accurax G5 has three types of control available: Analogue/Pulse, MLII (Mechatrolink-II), and EtherCAT. The drives support full closed loop operation for applications where additional accuracy is needed, and incorporate advanced tuning algorithms that feature an anti-vibration function, a torque feed-forward function to reduce following error and a disturbance observer.

Versatility is enhanced by the provision of two independent registration inputs per axis. These are particularly useful in flow wrapper and similar applications where, by registering the product position and the position of the mark on the film, the system can make fast accurate corrections with simple mechanical design.

Easy integration of Accurax G5 drives with, for example, Trajexia machine controllers and NS-series operator interface terminals is ensured by their support into Omron’s automation architecture. Based on Ethernet connectivity, this is readily configured with the CX-Drive component of the Omron CX-One software suite.

The drives are complemented by motors which use 10-pole construction to achieve a 40% reduction in cogging. The Accurax G5 motors, which have an IP67 ingress protection rating, also feature an integrated 20-bit encoder. Drives in the Accurax G5 range from Omron are available for 230 V single-phase operation with ratings from 50 W to 1,5 kW, and for 400 V three-phase operation with ratings from 400 W to 5 kW.
