West Coast water network upgrade

October 2010 SCADA/HMI

Adroit and SSE provide a single view solution for the West Coast district municipality.

The West Coast area is comprised of five municipalities and three district management areas (DMAs) which are administered by the West Coast district municipality. The five municipalities are: Swartland with Malmesbury as administrative centre; Bergrivier with Piketberg as administrative centre; Matzikama with Vredendal as administrative centre; Cederberg with Clanwilliam as administrative centre and Saldanha Bay with Vredenburg as administrative centre.

The West Coast water division embarked on a complete water network upgrade in 2009. This included the upgrading of the existing communications network from analogue to digital radio networks. The existing RTUs were also upgraded to the modern and reliable SSE RTUs. To increase the network speed and allow for communications to different display clients on different subnets, a wireless backbone was implemented using industrial wireless LAN links ranging from 5 to 65 km.

The area covered by this project is immense and ranges east/west from Saldanha to Gouda (100 km), and north/south from Dwarskerbos to Malmesbury (85 km). This gives an approximate area of 8500 km² under coverage. All these sites are monitored from one central point situated at Withoogte, near Moorreesberg.

By using Viznet, all changes are immediately rolled out to the remote clients. There is no need to do project restoration at every client PC. This allows for centralised backups and saves time and effort when doing changes. Changes can also be implemented from SSE’s offices, without having to travel to the various sites and without any additional software. This allows the client to get direct online support and online changes without any travel required.

One of the unique features is the SNMP driver, implemented to monitor all peripheral equipment in the system not directly used by the operators to control the water network. This includes all of the equipment critical to the operation of the network and crucial for problem solving and reducing downtime. The effect has been to increase the West Coast district municipality’s service delivery to its clients.
