IBC Solar breaks gigawatt mark

August 2010 Electrical Power & Protection

Since it was founded, IBC Solar has sold photovoltaic modules and systems with a total output of one gigawatt. In comparison: The photovoltaic systems currently connected to the grid in Germany produce a total output of around 12 gigawatts. Thanks to its successful agreements with national and international specialised partners, the solar modules sold to date cover an area of 10 million square metres. (Converted into truck loads this would yield a convoy stretching about 1400 km.)

“Our Premium Partners who worked with us to distribute environmentally-friendly PV technologies have made the greatest contribution to our success,” said Udo Möhrstedt, IBC founder and chairman.

“An installed capacity of one gigawatt prevents around 500 000 tons of CO2 each year.” Shortly after founding the company, Möhrstedt started developing a network of installers for photovoltaic components and systems. IBC now works with approximately 750 Premium Partners worldwide, including Lapp Kabel in South Africa.

IBC Solar’s projects both in Germany and abroad made a key contribution in reaching the one gigawatt mark of installed capacity. This includes PV systems, such as the 3,8 megawatt system on the roofs of Stuttgart’s new trade fair cantre and the 8 megawatt solar park in Neustrelitz. IBC solar power plants deliver environmentally friendly power in numerous countries around the world in line with the motto ‘think globally – act locally’. For example, two years ago, the company teamed up with the Spanish energy supplier Grupo Enercoop and constructed a high-capacity power station in Crevillente (Alicante province). Since 2008, this 13,2-megawatt system has been providing around 4000 households with environmentally friendly energy each year. 13 000 PV modules equipped with thin-film technology installed near the Bulgarian capital of Sofia have a capacity of over one megawatt and produce environmentally friendly power for more than 350 households.

Möhrstedt explained: “Fossil energy sources are drawing to an inevitable end. An environmentally friendly and, above all, secure energy supply can only be achieved based on renewable energy.”
