Encoderless safety functionality

July 2010 Motion Control & Drives

The Siemens Drive Technologies Division has now integrated the SLS (safely limited speed) safety function into its Sinamics S110 and S120 motion control converters without using an encoder. There is thus no longer any need for complex wiring, installation and commissioning of external encoders. The SLS function monitors the speed of induction motors, for example on winders in textile machines, in accordance with standard EN 61800-5-2. The encoderless solution for implementing SLS is not only available for the Sinamics S110 and S120 frequency converters, but also for the Sinamics G120 and G120D inverters.
