Flow sensors keep tabs on compressed air leaks

May 2001 Flow Measurement & Control

Many compressed air plants cause their owners headaches because the majority of those plants have leakages that lead to losses of over 30%. Porous welding seams, loose screw joints, corroded wires, leaky valves or worn out couplings have the costs sky-rocketing. There is a solution.

E-T-A has now come up with newly developed devices that do an effective job at finding leakages in compressed air plants; they are the FM1-CA and FM3 flowmeters and have been designed particularly for this task. The basic idea of their working principle is to monitor the air flow in production-free periods at selected points in the system. As soon as air is flowing, leakages are immediately discovered. The measured air flow gives an accurate indication of the extent of the leakage.

The new units are also well suited for establishing a consumption account. Consumption can then easily be referenced to individual cost centres or machines.

The sensor adapter - TP - is offered for both units for easy-to-fit installation. The FM1-CA is basically a measuring instrument with scalable analog output (voltage or current) plus two relay outputs or four transistor outputs and the FM3 is a flow monitor which can be ordered either with one relay or with one analog output for current.

The volume flow rate (m3/h) can be measured with the FM1-CA with CSP monitoring head and with the FM3. The flow rate (m/s) can be measured with the FM1-CA with monitoring head type CST fitted as usual in the pipeline.
