Electro-mechanical actuation

April 2010 Motion Control & Drives

SKF introduces the CAJ series.

The CAJ series actuation system has been designed and developed specifically for medical and health care applications where reliability and safety are of paramount importance. This new actuation system features the all-new CAJA range of electro-mechanical actuators and one control box. The system, which also includes operating devices and cables, conforms with EN IEC 60601-1 and UL 60601-1 as well as other corresponding standards.

The range has a number of standard and optional built-in safety features. From an overall design standpoint, CAJA actuators are designed to provide a high degree of rigidity. This is particularly important in medical and health care applications where the actuator may need to accommodate heavy static loads.

All CAJA actuators are equipped with a self-locking mechanical brake to keep the actuator push tube in position. Built-in limit switches shut off current to the motor without user intervention. Redundant limiters are provided by mechanical stops to prevent the push tube from over-extending or over-retracting.

The system also has a back-up nut. This provides an extra measure of safety when the actuator is in push mode. When activated, the actuator will only retract and will not continue to extend.

The ‘no pull function’ is an optional feature that helps reduce the risk of jamming in bed movements. The end stops prevent the tube from being disengaged. An optional built-in thermo-switch shuts off the power supply if the motor begins to overheat.

The CAJC control system is also equipped with standard and optional functionality and safety features. These include overload protection, which, as a standard feature, ensures that the CAJC control unit transformer is protected against overload by means of a thermal shield. In addition, the total power cut-off protects the control unit against overload if several actuators are in operation at the same time.

All CAJCs contain a relay protection circuit to prevent the electrical arc from power surges and stops. For an extra measure of safety, the redundant switches, which are standard features in the control box, cut current to the actuator.

The standard housing for all products is made from UL 94 V0 polymer which is resistant to heat and fire.
