Conveyor fire detector
March 2010
Temperature Measurement
Early detection of hot-spots on the conveyor.
Coal, transported on any form of conveyor system, has the potential to ignite. It is also a good insulator against heat, therefore a fire which is burning beneath the surface may not be immediately obvious.
A single point temperature measurement system can detect a hot-spot, but might just as easily miss one. To solve the problem, Land has introduced a scanning temperature measurement system that looks at the entire width of the conveyor at any given time. It scans at a wide angle at high-speed and with fast response times, detecting all hot-spots since the entire coal surface is being viewed. The scanner is capable of detecting even small hot objects on the conveyor with its high-speed detector and transmits the hottest temperature on the conveyor directly to a plant control or customer alarm system.
The scanner is highly robust with a range of mounting and protection accessories. The system is mounted above the conveyor and connected via a single eight-core cable to the processing unit, which is usually mounted in the control room. The processor powers the scanner and also provides the signal outputs.
The Land Infrared LineScanner has a measurement range from 20 to 250°C. The small measuring head is mounted to directly view the conveyor and scans at up to 1000 points per scan at 100 scans per second over the complete conveyor width (80° scan angle).
The processor provides the power supply to the measuring head and has two independent 4-20 mA temperature outputs; it processes the scanning head data to produce a peak temperature signal. The processor also has digital outputs for high temperature alarms (set by the customer), and it will display a trend of the peak temperature gradient along the length of the conveyor. There is no need for any additional PC, soft/hardware or additional complex wiring.
