High ambient temperatures and the adverse dusty conditions encountered in harsh packaging and bottling applications can be overcome by means of a range of special environmental options that are available. High speed low temperature applications are handled by a compact range of units with measuring heads as small as 28 mm long and 14 mm in diameter. Low cost units are also available to allow users to replace existing contact type thermocouples with a non-contact IR unit. Small and compact the newly introduced Raytek CM is similar in size to an 18 mm proximity switch. Operating from a 12–24 VDC supply the unit gives fast J or K type thermocouple response or a 0–5 VDC output for compatibility with legacy indication or control systems. It can also be used as a simple temperature switch via the programmable alarm output.
Non-contact temperature measurement provides many ways to resolve traditional problems associated no-go areas in process applications: for instance, measurements from highly reflective surfaces such as aluminium, stainless steel and other alloys are possible using the right know how.
