Unmanaged gigabit rail-switches

December 2009 IT in Manufacturing

Profitek, a leading distributor of industrial communication products has introduced two new Hirschmann unmanaged Gigabit rail-switches to the local market. The Spider II Giga 5T EEC and the Spider Giga 5T/2S EEC are both high-speed entry level devices in the industrial Ethernet networking market.

The Spider II Giga 5T/2S EEC is an unmanaged rail-switch that has a range of up to 120 km. It has two fibre-optic ports and is suitable for external usage over long distances compatible with any line/star topology; it has a ‘store’ and ‘forward’ switching mode and an extended operating temperature range of -40 to +70°C. The switch measures 35 x 138 x 121 mm and weighs 240 g.

The Spider II Giga 5T EEC has five UTP ports and is suitable for local areas, but limited to a distance of 100 m between switches. It has the following electromagnetic compatibility ratings:

* EN 61000-4-2 electrostatic discharge – 6 kV contact discharge/8 kV air discharge.

* EN 61000-4-3 electromagnetic field – 10 V/m (80–1000 MHz).

* EN 61000-4-4 fast transients (burst) – 2 kV powerline, 4 kV data line.

* EN 61000-4-5 surge voltage – power line: 2 kV (line/earth), 1 kV (line/line), 1 kV data line.

* EN 61000-4-6 conducted immunity – 10 kV (150 kHz–80 kHz).

It has an operating temperature of -40 to +70°C and non-condensing relative humidity of 10%–95%. The port type is 5 x 10/100/1000BASE-T, with TP-cabling and RJ45 sockets and also offers auto-crossing, auto-negotiation and auto-polarity.
