Experion to manage capacity utilisation

November 2009 SCADA/HMI

Honeywell technology helps improve energy efficiency and cut production costs at a leading Nordic energy provider.

Honeywell has been selected to rebuild the operating system of a 1000 megawatt power plant operated by Fortum, a leading energy provider in the Nordic region and the Baltic Rim. The project will deliver industry-leading levels of safety, reliability, efficiency and environmental compliance to the plant.

Honeywell’s Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) will be used to operate the power station. Experion streamlines production by allowing plants to unify process, production and business management. The system integrates data from critical subsystems across the facility, such as process units and safety systems, and delivers relevant information directly to operators for improved decision making in the control room. Experion should also help to reduce maintenance costs, improve productivity and produce energy more economically by enabling plant operators to better monitor and manage capacity utilisation and other aspects of the production process.

Additionally, Honeywell’s Safety Manager will be used to help boost safety capabilities at the site. Safety Manager integrates safety systems such as fire and gas detectors into overall control and automation strategies. Honeywell’s UniSim Operator Training System will be used to train the plant operators, further enabling the staff to facilitate safe and efficient plant start-up. Honeywell will also provide a wide range of services, including pre-engineering, application engineering, installation, commissioning and fine tuning of the system.

“We have been asked to deliver turnkey services based on our experience in this sector and are therefore managing every aspect of this project, from the development of application software through to testing and commissioning,” said Timo Saarelainen, managing director, Honeywell Finland. “The improvements we are making will help extend the life of the plant.”

Honeywell was selected for the project for a number of reasons. Chief among them were its lifecycle management concept, project and domain expertise, well-developed local support capabilities and industry reputation.
