Battery-powered water meter

May 2009 Flow Measurement & Control

Krohne has introduced a new measuring instrument: The WATERFLUX 3070 is an electromagnetic water meter for standard applications in the water and wastewater industry. It has a battery life of 15 years, making it especially suitable for applications where no power connection is available. The meter also has the option of a GSM module for remote transmission of measurement data and status information.

The meter is available in sizes from DN 25 to DN 600

The new meter offers some unique benefits: the extremely short inlets and outlets allow the WATERFLUX to be installed in very narrow wells and chambers. According to Krohne the meter is highly accurate and being a magnetic-inductive meter, it has some advantages over mechanical water meters in terms of pressure loss and long-term stability. For large diameters, the WATERFLUX 3070 has a price advantage when compared to the lifetime cost of mechanical meters, which require filters as well as maintenance and cleaning.

The heart of the WATERFLUX is the measuring tube with a rectangular cross section allowing the coils to be arranged so that a strong, homogeneous magnetic field is formed and the measurement is thus independent of flow profile. In addition, this allows for extremely short inlets and outlets and highly accurate measurement. The tube itself is of high-pressure stable metal construction with a coating of Rilsan making it suitable for use in potable water applications.

For the operation of an electromagnetic water meter electrical energy is needed, however, in many cases, the remote location of the meter makes connection to the electricity grid impossible. Krohne have overcome this problem by giving the WATERFLUX 3070 a battery life of up to 15 years making it maintenance-free for the lifetime of the battery. The long battery life was achieved through innovative sensor design, which has allowed Krohne to reduce the meter’s power consumption significantly compared to conventional electromagnetic flow meters.

A data-logger and GSM transmitter are available for use in remote locations. The data-logger stores all data, including peak flow and low flow, this information is then transmitted by the GSM network to the next radio mast and from there via satellite to a server that the user can access.

The device is also available in combination with the signal converters IFC 100 and IFC 300, enabling the application and benefits of the unique sensor design in those industries where there is mains power available.
