In October 2008, the University of Botswana was sponsored an Adroit Technologies Scada System in response to lecturer Dr John T. Agee’s desire to implement laboratory training for students. The scada system donated by Adroit will help students practice and carry out a vast array of tasks assigned to them in the course of their studies, and will make use of the existing PLCs and instrumentation modules.
A separate, independent, Adroit Server is currently installed on each of the workstations in one of the PC labs, allowing students to create their own scada applications and even to link to each other’s projects to share tags; the latest Version 7 of Adroit is being used to give students a good grounding in intelligent alarm strategies for manufacturing processes. From March 2009, students will begin to create their own scada applications using Adroit, which will then form part of the process control systems course.
Dr Agee noted that since the implementation of Adroit students have appeared more motivated now that their training includes scada system development. He commented further that these skills were requested by the mining and process industries in Botswana, and he expects that student employment opportunities will be enhanced through the inclusion of the Adroit training in the curriculum.
