Sensors for pneumatic cylinders

January 2009 Sensors & Transducers

Turck has added a compact magnetic pick-up to its range of special sensors for pneumatic cylinders. The WIM45-UNTL provides an analog output proportional to the position of the piston between the ends of the cylinder, which allows penetration depths and stroke motion to be detected precisely at any time. This type of detection is useful for a large number of applications such as ultrasonic welding, hot air riveting, bolting, pressing, clamping, cutting and quality control. The new sensor provides an efficient alternative to wear-intensive and mechanically cumbersome solutions based on potentiometers or expensive linear positioning systems.

Packaged in a housing 72 mm in length and 5 mm wide it is one of the most compact sensors of its type available. Two fixing lips enable easy fitment in the cylinder groove, while the fixing screws allow adjustment and ensure secure, vibration free mounting.

12 hall-effect transducers produce the analogue signals for processing with electro-magnetic interference being eliminated through signal comparison and cancellation. The analogue output (0-10 V or 4-20 mA) is linear and independent of the polarity orientation of the magnet in the cylinder. The characteristic curve can thus be changed from 0-10 V to 10-0 V by a simple rotation. In-range functionality detects whether the magnet is within the allowed measuring range, if not, an overshoot signal indicates at which end the range has been exceeded.

A wide range of accessories is available, including devices for:

* Mounting on different cylinder types.

* Fine adjustment of the measuring range.

* Fixing a reproducible measuring range after mounting a sensor.

* Cable fastening and protection.
