Non-contact inclinometers

US army selects Celesco.

When the US Army Corps of Engineers wanted to automate the flow control of the Arkansas River, they chose Celesco’s IT9420 inclinometers to provide the solution they needed for the radial gates of their lock and dam facilities. The 40 foot high radial gates rotate to open and close and Celesco’s IT9420 inclinometers provided a simple, yet reliable measurement of the rotation.

Easy installation

The IT9420s utilised for this particular lock and dam facility have a measurement range of 110°. Easy to install, the inclinometers were mounted on the main pivot arm of the gate; it took just two bolts to install the units. No other mechanical connections were required for the installation. The non-contact inclinometers have a robust enclosure, making them ideal for outdoor applications where inclement environments may be an issue.

Operating principles

Celesco’s model IT9420 inclinometers provide angular measurements that are relative to gravity. An internal pendulum is coupled to the shaft of an advanced, low-friction, very-long life rotary potentiometer. As the IT9420 rotates, the pendulum (and shaft) remains oriented by gravity, generating a 4–20 mA signal output that is proportional to the housing rotation. These rugged sensors are used to make angular measurements in applications such as water gates, cranes, drawbridges, and industrial automation equipment such as the dancer position in a continuous web process.

Available in a variety of full scale ranges from 45 to 240°, the IT9420s have zero and span adjustments in order to set the 4–20 mA output signal over a specific range. Both IP67 and IP68 (submersible) configurations are available for the Model IT9420. Additionally, a stainless steel housing version may also be specified for those challenging environmental situations that have caustic and corrosive conditions.
