Full torque at zero Hertz

November 2008 Motion Control & Drives

CHI Control Components has supplied one of their Vacon variable speed drives to Western Platinum Mines for a unique hoisting application. The Vacon NXP variable speed drive is supplying full torque at zero Hertz enabling accurate control to the smelter electrodes ensuring absolute furnace temperature control.

The air-cooled Vacon NXP is a state-of-the-art variable speed AC drive for use in all applications where robustness, dynamic performance, precision and power are required from 0,75 to 3 250 kW. The quality and reliability of a machine or a process is in most cases the result of the precise and dynamic control of AC motors. The Vacon NXP has been designed to provide the best possible control under all circumstances ensuring a high operational quality and availability for the lifetime of the system.

Communication and control

The unit offers a complete range of communications and I/O options with fast drive to drive communication. It offers a high-performance control platform for all demanding drive applications. There are five slots for I/O boards. An external +24 V supply option enables communication with the control unit even if the mains supply is switched off (eg, for fieldbus communication and parameter setting). The Vacon NXP supports both induction motors and permanent magnet motors in open and closed loop control modes. For the closed loop control encoder, feedback from an incremental pulse encoder is normally used. It is also possible to use absolute encoders as the Vacon NXP is available with EnDat and resolver interfaces.

Additional features

CHI offers a comprehensive range of variable speed drives available from 0,25 kW up to 5 MW, both air cooled and liquid cooled with open and closed loop control offering brake chopper/resistor options. The units are also available with a removable keypad common to the entire range. An important feature of the range is that the logic cards are isolated from the power compartment, limiting damage in the event of a power component failure. They are compatible with Modbus, DeviceNet and Profibus connectivity. The units come complete with input chokes as standard and the I/O expansion cards are available.
