Unique control, measurement and operational challenges in water distribution.
In South Africa, water distribution is handled by an institutional tier between national and local government in the form of 15 water boards. These water boards supply to both large industrial consumers as well as local municipalities, which then redistribute to industrial, commercial and residential users.
The water networks face unique challenges for operation and maintenance. The requirements to run and maintain the infrastructure are multifaceted and include: supply and demand management; storage; pumping; loss control; disaster management and ensuring acceptable service levels.
Because these systems of water sources, pump stations, reservoirs, purification/cleaning plants and the clients are geographically distributed; there are unique challenges, especially in the South African context.
Solutions to these often require new and creative ways of looking at:
* Measurement of flow and pressure.
* Use of battery powered devices.
* Use of GSM/GPRS data transport where other methods are too expensive.
* Alarms for leak detection or disaster aversion systems.
* Automated billing systems.
* Control centre information systems.
